The Boiler Upgrade Scheme heat pump grant, explained
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump in England and Wales. Until March 2027, homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get £9,000. You do not apply yourself: your installer applies, and the grant comes straight off your quote. Here is who qualifies, how it works step by step, and what the grant does not cover.

What the grant is worth
The government sets the grant amounts. For an air source heat pump, which heats your radiators and your hot water, they are:
The extra £1,500 for homes off the gas grid is a time limited boost. GOV.UK says it applies until March 2027, so if you heat with oil or LPG this winter is a good time to look.
Can you get it?
These are the main rules on GOV.UK. Your installer checks them with you before anything is booked.
- Your property is in England or Wales.
- You own it. That includes second homes, homes you rent out and business premises.
- You are replacing fossil fuel heating: gas, oil, LPG or electric heating.
- The property has not already had government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler.
- It is not social housing, and in most cases not a new build. Some self-builds can qualify.
- The heat pump is installed and commissioned within 120 days of the grant application.
You do not need to have insulation done first. The Energy Saving Trust says insulation is not required, although your installer may suggest improvements that help the heat pump work well.
How it works
- First
Survey and quote
An MCS certified installer surveys your home, works out the heat loss room by room and designs the system. The quote you agree already has the grant taken off.
- Next
The installer applies
Your installer applies to Ofgem, which runs the scheme, on your behalf. You do not fill in any forms or receive any money yourself.
- Within 120 days
Installation
The heat pump is fitted and commissioned. GOV.UK says this must happen within 120 days of the application.
- Afterwards
Paperwork
The installer issues your MCS certificate and claims the grant. You pay the balance of the quote.
What the grant does not cover
Why the installer matters
Only an MCS certified installer who is a member of an approved consumer code can claim the grant. The Energy Saving Trust suggests getting more than one quote so you can compare.
MCS certification means the system is designed and fitted to the national standard. At the end you receive an MCS certificate for your heat pump, which is worth keeping with your home's paperwork.
- Who applies
- Your installer, not you
- Installer must be
- MCS certified and a member of a consumer code such as RECC
- How you get it
- Taken off your quote
- Largest heat pump size
- 45 kW for a single system, which covers almost every home

How much is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
£7,500 off an air source or ground source heat pump. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500, making £9,000, until March 2027. A biomass boiler gets £5,000.
Do I apply for the grant myself?
No. Your MCS certified installer applies to Ofgem for you, and the grant is taken off your quote.
Do I need a good EPC rating or insulation first?
No. Insulation is not required, although your installer may recommend improvements that help your heat pump run efficiently.
Can landlords get the grant?
Yes. GOV.UK says you must own the property, and that includes homes you rent to tenants. Social housing is not eligible.
Can I get the grant if I have already had a heat pump grant?
No. A property that has already had government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler cannot claim again. Other energy efficiency funding does not stop you applying.
