Why book an Air Source
Heat Pump Service?

Regular maintenance of your air source heat pump is key in order to keep it operating efficiently and to avoid any costly and unexpected repair work. Here's why our health check service is invaluable to your home and the environment:

  • Optimal Performance & Efficiency: Ensure your heat pump is running smoothly, providing maximum output while consuming minimum energy.
  • Early Issue Detection: Identify potential problems early, preventing disruptions and costly repairs down the line.
  • Maximise Energy Savings: A well-maintained heat pump ensures your energy bills stay low while reducing your environmental impact.
  • Extend Your System's Lifespan: Protect your investment by enhancing durability and preventing unnecessary wear and tear.
  • Peace of Mind: Know that your heating system is in expert hands, functioning as it should, and keeping your home warm and eco-friendly.

What, Why and How

Servicing an air source heat pump (ASHP) involves annual checks for efficiency and safety, covering electricals, pipework, and component wear, plus basic user tasks like clearing filters and keeping the outdoor unit clear. A qualified engineer inspects coils, refrigerant temperatures, and settings, while homeowners should regularly clear obstructions and maintain filters to prevent issues, ensure warranty compliance, and maximise lifespan.

Professional Servicing (Annual)

  • Component InspectionChecking fan bearings, heat exchangers, expansion vessels, valves, and internal/outdoor coils for dirt and wear.
  • Performance ChecksMeasuring airflow, refrigerant levels, system pressure, delta T, and verifying correct flow rates and settings.
  • Fluid & Filter MaintenanceCleaning or replacing filters, cleaning the magnetic filter, and checking antifreeze (glycol) levels if applicable.
  • Controls & WiringTesting thermostats, remote controls, and checking electrical wiring for damage.
  • Full System AuditVisually check vents, pressure testing, electrical circuit tests, and leak checks on pipework.

User Maintenance (Monthly / Regular)

  • Clear ObstructionsKeep the outdoor unit free from leaves, snow, and bushes (at least 5 feet away) for adequate airflow.
  • Clean FiltersRegularly clean or replace air filters for optimal performance.
  • Inspect Coils & DrainageVisually check and gently clean the outdoor unit's fins and ensure the drainage system is clear.

Why It's Important

  • Efficiency & CostPrevents energy loss and keeps running costs down.
  • LongevityExtends the unit's lifespan, like a car.
  • WarrantyOften required to maintain the manufacturer's warranty.
  • ReliabilityCatches small issues before they become costly breakdowns.

Heat Pump Servicing
FAQs

Cost, cover, warranties and what you can do yourself — the questions homeowners ask us most about looking after a heat pump.

How often should an air source heat pump be serviced?

Once a year. An annual service keeps the system running at the efficiency it was designed for, and most manufacturers require a documented yearly service for the warranty to stay valid. Between services there is very little to do beyond keeping the outdoor unit clear and the filters clean.

How much does an air source heat pump service cost?

An air source heat pump annual service is £199. A hybrid heating system is £299, a ground source heat pump is £299 and an exhaust air heat pump is £209. Every service includes a full inspection, performance check and a written report from a qualified engineer.

How long does the service take?

Allow 1 hour 30 minutes for an air source heat pump or a hybrid system, and 2 hours for a ground source or exhaust air heat pump. We book a time slot rather than a morning or afternoon window, so you are not waiting in all day.

What is included in an annual heat pump service?

Component inspection of fan bearings, heat exchangers, expansion vessels, valves and coils; performance checks covering airflow, refrigerant, system pressure, delta T and flow rates; filter and magnetic filter cleaning with a glycol check where applicable; controls and wiring testing; and a full system audit including pressure testing, electrical circuit tests and leak checks on pipework.

Will missing a service affect my warranty?

It can. Manufacturers commonly make an annual service by a qualified engineer a condition of the warranty, so a missed year can leave you without cover on the most expensive parts of the system. We keep a record of every service we carry out so you have the documentation if you ever need to make a claim.

Do you service heat pumps you did not install?

Yes. We service most makes of air source heat pump, not only our own installations. The first visit takes a little longer because we establish a baseline for the system before we can measure drift against it.

What should I do between services?

Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow and planting — allow around five feet of free space for airflow. Clean or replace the air filters regularly, and visually check that the outdoor fins are clean and the drainage is running away freely. Anything beyond that is best left to the annual service.

Do you service ground source and hybrid systems as well?

Yes. We service air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, exhaust air heat pumps and hybrid heating systems, each on its own plan and time allowance.

Which areas do you cover for servicing?

We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire from our base in Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire. The areas page lists the towns with their own local pages.

Does servicing actually reduce running costs?

A heat pump that is dirty, low on flow rate or running on drifted settings has to work harder for the same heat, and you pay for that in electricity. Cleaning the filters and coils and re-checking the settings puts the system back to the performance it was commissioned at, which is where its running costs were calculated from.
